The MLK training runs were well attended last weekend with 56 starters for Catherine's 8 on Saturday, and 60 runners showing for the revised Gap to Gap on Sunday. Temps were low and winds were high as runners made their way around the Catherine's course, with a slight improvement in the weather for those traversing the G2G figure eight the next day in the Massanuttens.

While many of us picked our way across cold and snowy Massanutten rocks last weekend, a few of our members dodged the famous Banyan roots on the HURT100 course in sunny Hawaii. Keith Knipling, Alex Papadopoulos and Megan McGrath all finished. Results | HURT website

The 18th running of the Redeye 50K Run in Prince William Forest Park took place Wednesday January 1, 2014. The craziness of this New Years Day event, started in 1997 by Team Slug, had the largest starting field ever (124) and the largest number of 50K finishers (36). Updated with all results, such as they are.

Congratulations to William Weidman, Keith Knipling, Matt Banning, Matt Christovich and Brian Quintana for being the top five finishers respectively at the 2013 running of the Boyers Furnace Fat Ass Forty. Superb weather and good footing contributed to the fast finishes in what proved to be a highly competitive field.

The VHTRC put on the 22nd version of the Magnus Gluteus Maximus 50km - a free holiday social event for the area trail running community - on December 14. A large group braved the adverse weather reports. The rain held off to make it a good day for running. Thanks to Joe Clapper and several other folks who made it all possible.

In what RD David Horton gleefully described as "Hellgate Weather" (snow at night, sleet, freezing rain and rain all day), our VHTRC members demonstrated true grit and perseverance. Kathleen Cusick ran the sixth fastest time for a woman (13:20) to lead the top-5 females. Megan Stegemiller was 4th and Sophie Speidel was 5th. Kerry Owens was the first Grandmaster female. Brad Hinton was 4th male, and Jack Kurisky was 10th. Many other VHTRC runners finished the 66.6 mile course, including Quatro Hubbard and Bruce Tweedie who persevered in hard rain despite missing the final 18-hour cut-off.

Steve Core pointed out to us that Prasad Gerard was named the cross country coach of the year in Montgomery County, Maryland. A boy on Prasad's Poolesville team won the state championship and a girl was third. Both his boys and girls teams were second in the Maryland State 2A Cross County Championships. More information
