Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 Mile Run
MMT Changes for 2009
There will be a few significant changes to the 2009 MMT.
The most significant changes are caused by crew vehicle congestion that has become a big problem. We have tried to react to this problem in a way that retains the crew-friendly atmosphere of the event, but addresses the significant safety concerns shared by both the Forest Service and us.
We have been able to increase the field size this year. But we were only able to do that by changing the course and adopting significant restrictions on crews in the Route 211 part of the course.
Everyone should recognize that we all have a shared interest in the impact of this event on traffic in the area. Your crew's behavior matters. If crews cooperate with these new measures, it will be very good for the future of the event.
Major Changes
- Field Size: We can now have 175 runners in the event. That's the good news. We could only do this, however, by agreeing to new measures on crews and pacers at aid stations along Route 211.
- Entry Procedure: We will have a much different entry procedure.
- Entry will be by lottery with a waiting list. All applicants will have an equal chance of getting on the initial entry list. We will give priority to prior finishers, volunteers, etc. on the waiting list. More Information
- We will move people from the waiting list to the entrants list up to a week away from the event. We will, however, only have five more entrants (180) than our target entry number (175) to allow for no-shows.
- Course: We will go back to the course we used in 2005. We are doing this to reduce congestion at the aid stations along Route 211. Runners will not do Waterfall Mountain and will go down the Gap Creek Trail only one time. Visitors Awards will again be earned by arriving at the Visitors Center.
- Route 211 Aid Stations: There will be aid stations at the Visitors Center, the Picnic Area, and 211 East, but your crew may not go to all of them. Your crew will not have guaranteed access to any of these aid stations and will have to be flexible. (See next item.)
- Crews and Pacers on Route 211: Each runner will be allowed only one support vehicle at any aid station along Route 211, and that vehicle will need a tag from race management. Having a pacer does not permit an additional vehicle. There will be significant restrictions on crews at these aid stations. More Information
- Runners without Crews or Pacers: There will be a new "Stonewall Jackson Foot Cavalry Division" for runners who do not have a crew or pacer. There will be a silver belt buckle for the top male and the top female in this division.
- Entry Fee: The entry fee will increase from $140 to $150. We believe that this increase is required by overall rising costs, the cost of a quality entrant's premium and volunteer reward, and most importantly the ranch's cost. We believe that we are still a good "value" when compared to other 100 milers.
Details of these changes are elsewhere on this site or will be soon. If you have questions, contact the RD.
